Today is Thanksgiving Monday and the day we have set aside to reflect on the many things to be grateful for. How precious to have had you, Matthew, in our lives for such a short time. You left many precious, loving memories that will always be remembered. Yes, we thank God daily for his gracious gift in providing us a son/brother that is always with us in Spirit. We treasure the Christian belief and realization that we will all be together one day at God's appointed time and according to his plan. Thank you Matthew for showing us how to live with empathy, kindness, love and dedication. You did this so well and because of this the people and world around you is a better place.

Matthew, although we miss the warmth of your hugs, your presence in our daily life continues. Soft support, great love, and sunny smiles can be felt always, and we now understand this will never fade. Unexpected to us is how your death has taught us to live, and together our spiritual journey continues. We love this, and we love you.

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY

Angel,
The greatness of this day is in what you did with it. In that in all was an opportunity, in that positive was always a decided option, in grand strides and little moments you charged it all and humbly gave so much. Having you as my husband, being so privileged to what is all you, the veracity of what you mean to me...found in the same place as that smile, those eyes. I miss you. The world will never waiver from how tremendous you made it, but it has not been the same since. Thank you for filling my world with awe.
Infinite Love and stars of kisses,
Laurie

Matthew, your birthday will always be celebrated and remembered as you are a special gift from God. You chose us to be your family and how Blessed we are because of it. The Angels are bringing you our love, hugs and birthday wishes on this special day. Happy Birthday.
Always loved and remembered,
Mom & Dad

Brother, we have 28 years of great memories and laughter of sharing our birthday together. For the past two you've been closer than ever. We never walk alone. Thanks for your ongoing strength, presence, and every sign you leave along the way as reminders.
Much love,
Jonathan

Your personality and love is so strong that it has persisted after your death. The amazing lessons that you have taught me continue, and I love the ongoing miracles that are you. Happy Birthday to my guardian angel! God blessed you, and continues to bless me.
Love, your sis,
Tasha

Miss you like crazy here Matty B! Thanks for being such a great brother to my wife. Smiles and laughter fill our memories.
Your brother-in-law,
Allan

Missing your smile, your humor, and your kind soul. God is so very lucky to have you by his side. Happy 30th Birthday Matt!
Love,
Jen and Adam

Birthdays are a day of celebration for a life born into this world. April 9th is a day of celebration of Matt's birth. For me April 9th is a day of immense gratitude that of the select few people in this world, one of the greatest persons I know, chose me to be a part of his beautiful life. Today I honor you Matt as my brother-in-law and as an amazing husband to one of the other greatest persons I know, and as an indescribably good person. This isn't a "happy birthday", yet it is a beautiful day. April 9th, 1979 the world gained a most brilliant and shining star. Today we all still have that brilliant and shining star and we celebrate your life Matt. On this, your 30th birthday I am taken back to the celebrations we all shared together. I laugh and then I laugh some more. Thank you for giving me those heart prints.
Love always,
Christie

Matt,
You mean so much to so many people in this world. Your kindness and generosity to others is never forgotten. In the time we shared together I learned so much directly and indirectly from you. Your ability to show compassion for people is unconditional. I truly believe that you are one of the brightest stars to lead the way for all others to follow. Knowing you the way I do and seeing you living your life has inspired me to live a better, more meaningful life.
Love always,
Craig

I want to say I love you Uncle Matt. I sing you songs. I watch TV every day. Happy birthday Uncle Matt. I play so much and I think of you when I play.
I love you,
Tessa

Matt represents strength, determination, love and commitment. He has shown our family that perseverance and honour in all that one takes on is so important in fulfilling those lifelong dreams. We see Matt's smile in photos and memories and we still cannot truly believe the permanent nature of our loss. There is not a day that goes by without a wonderful thought of Matt; his exemplary life, that endearing positive attitude and his genuine integrity as a man. As a friend, a brother-in-law, and a fabulously entertaining uncle, Matt set the bar higher for all of us. On this day, Matt's 30th birthday, we raise a toast to a great man and a friend we will never forget... Love always,
Pete & Cara

Uncle Matt always had sunshine in his eyes and he loved us kids...
Love always,
Benjamin, Arianna & Isabella

Matt was truly one of our most favorite people in the world. We have missed seeing his sweet smiling face since he left Alaska and were so looking forward to seeing him again and finally meeting Laurie.

This picture was taken a couple days after he was released from the hospital after nearly losing his arm. That kid just never quit smiling! No matter how bad things seemed to be. We became very close during his stay with us, spending many nights staying up late talking, laughing, planning his career...he became my little shadow while waiting for paperwork to come through so he could start flying in King Salmon. He was so excited but at the same time you could tell he was torn. He had just started dating Laurie before he came back to Alaska and missed her terribly. And although his accident was devastating at the time I think he was pretty happy to be going home.

We will miss his sweet disposition and never yeilding positive attitude. It is an honor to have known him and I can't imagine meeting someone more kind and courageous than Matt. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the Bienert's, Laurie's family, and all of Matt's many, many friends. It is obvious that he touched so many more people than just us. We are all better people to have had the privilege of knowing him although it was so brief.

Blue skies, dear friend! Keep flying!

LIFE¡so fragile¡LOSS¡so sudden¡HEART¡so broken¡

Last weekend we (the Cornelson Kids) were at Alberta Beach when we received the sad, sad news. Sunday morning we awoke to a beautiful day; the sun was shining and the sky was crystal blue. We (Gail, Linda, Kenton, Sherry (cousins) and Tina (second cousin) decided to take a walk down to the beach. As we were taking in the beauty and the stillness of the lake, a floater plane flew in front of us¡a moment I won¡¯t forget. We all just stood there, some said a prayer, some of us waved, and some of us said nothing. At that moment, we knew that Matthew was with us. As we were taking in our thoughts that morning, we came across a piece of concrete that sat underneath a tree and next to a bench. We all decided to create a memorial for Matthew. We decided to build Matthew an Inukshuk which is pronounced ee-nook-shook. The meaning of the word is ¡°in the image of Man¡±. The purpose of the statue is to show direction and guide the way. It is the symbol of the 2010 Olympic icon in Vancouver. It is a stone formation, and each stone is supported by the one above and the one below it¡no one piece is any more or less important than the other¡its strength lies in its unity. To build an Inukshuk you must find the perfect balance for each rock. Each creation is unique. Inukshuks found in natural setting are created from rocks gathered in the immediate area, and reflects characteristics of its surrounding. So¡ we each picked out a rock and started to form our Inukshuk. It took its form in no time. We also made the letter ¡°M¡± and a ¡°Cross¡± made out of branches and we tied it together with dried grass, and placed it upon the concrete.
Our Inukshuk was now complete. It has calmness to it and will hopefully sit undisturbed for years to come.

In the wake of such a loss, we are haunted by things we don¡¯t-and may never-understand, yet the solace we seek may not come from answers. So we look for comfort in the belief of love¡¯s everlasting connection. May that love lift you, hold you close, and give you peace.

Matthew you will be forever missed. Your kindness and everlasting smile will never be forgotten.

Peace, Prayers, and Blessing,
Sherry, Bob, Jenni and Kyle Tankard
(California)

My cousin, we will miss you so much. So many memories keep playing through our minds...I remember proudly introducing my (then) boyfriend Glenn to the beautiful babies laying on a blanket under the crabapple tree at my Mom's house so many years ago. We remember the toddler who played hard with his brother and the miniature rocking chairs that you would rest on before the next round of fun. We remember the seven year old who fought sleep during our long wedding ceremony whose head nodded up and down. We admired how you handled so many physical mishaps throughout your life with such a shining inner strength. We so enjoyed our many visits watching you grow to the beautiful man you became. Thank you Aunt Gailene and Uncle Neil, for making the effort to ensure we shared in Matt's life. Matthew, while we replay so many more moments in our mind, the one memory and photo that gives us most peace is of you and Laurie at Tasha and Al's wedding celebration. Seeing the aura of love that surrounded you both was amazing. You were so deserving and fortunate to have found that love with her. Laurie our hearts are with you and thank you so much for bringing such an unparalleled degree of happiness to Matt's life. Laurie, Aunt Gailine, Uncle Neil, Tasha and Al, Jonathan - we hope that our prayers and thoughts will bring you some comfort during this sad time.

Our first tailgater. This picture was from grade 1 when we went on an adventure on a piece of ground my family calls the Ratry place. After drinking copious amounts of Tahiti Treat, Matthew, Jonathan, Greg, and I spent a day which would become one of the most memorable days of my life. We even used our experiences that day to complete a school project the following week. We were to write a story under the premiss of fortunately/unfortunately, where fortunately something happened but unfortunately something else happened. It was strange fate to have that assignment after such a great day ¨C I still remember the day we wrote that in class. The Bienert¡¯s home was like a 2nd home for me growing up. Matthew, Jonathan, and I shared a love for sports, school, humor, and mischief, not necessarily in that order. Mr. Bienert kept us in stitches with his turkey noises and Art Linkletter references. Mrs. Bienert¡¯s enthusiasm at sporting events and her ability to catch us doing things we weren¡¯t supposed to be doing, made for some great memories to look back on. Tasha was as much a friend as a sister to Matt, and they were as close as any siblings I know. Jonathan, what can I say, you guys were so close it was like you were twins or something, haha. Meatball and Sprite, loosing Matt must be like loosing a part of you, but I can honestly say you are the strongest person (both physically and mentally) that I know. Laurie, it has been a pleasure getting to know you better through Matt. You are such a caring person and the connection you and Matt share is such a genuine one. Fortunately we all had the good fortune of knowing Matthew; unfortunately he had to leave us in such an abrupt manner. Matt, you had an uncanny ability at being good at whatever you did, and it was amazing knowing you.

Matt, you were a man of few words, or at least that's how it seemed whenever we were out. I think the reason was not that there was nothing to say, but there was no time to actually say it. Every time we were out it was with Laurie and my wife Kelly. You and I would sip our beer, exchange the occasional comment about how our wives could talk forever about everything, and think how lucky we were to be with such fantastic women. I'm really going to miss those times the four of us could find a corner in a nice (or even not so nice pub) and have a few beers and a good conversation. I wish we could have had more of those. As short a time as it was, I feel lucky to have known you. People felt good just sharing the same space with you and whether you knew it or not you would always leave things better than how you found them. The goodwill you spread during your time here was more than most people can manage in their entire lifetimes. Thanks for being you. You'll be missed, my friend.

He took such good care of my big sister and I have never seen two people so in love as they were. Matt had this calming, happy effect on people. You just felt so at ease when he was around.
